Water-based glazes and saturators

Water-based woodstain and saturator are ideal solutions for protecting and embellishing your wooden surfaces, while taking care of the environment and the health of the applicator. Woodstain and saturant penetrate the wood and protect it from the elements, while preserving its natural appearance. Despite this, there are a number of differences between these two protective solutions: their field of application, their mode of action and their final finish.

Advantages of a waterborne woodstain and saturator

Water-based woodstains and saturators have several strong points:

  1. They protect the wood perfectly against humidity and UV rays. They are a real asset for extending the life of your wooden components. Our XyloGuard Hydro woodstain and XyloGuard Hydro saturator are particularly effective.
  2. They are more environmentally friendly than solvent-based woodstains and saturators. They emit fewer Volatile Chemical Compounds (VOCs) than solvent-based alternatives.
  3. They have no solvent odour. This makes them ideal for your interior decoration work, even if the premises are occupied.
  4. They penetrate the wood, preserving its natural appearance and grain, unlike paint, which covers the surface completely.
  5. They are flexible and microporous, so the wood breathes better.

Differences between woodstain and saturator

Action and protection:

Woodstains form a thin film on the surface of the wood, offering protection against moisture, UV rays and other environmental damage. They also colour the wood without covering its grain.

Saturators penetrate deep into the wood fibres without forming a film on the surface. They protect wood from the inside out against moisture, UV and other damage, while preserving its natural appearance.

Final appearance:

Woodstains add colour to the surface of wood while preserving its natural texture. Our XyloGuard Hydro Stain offers a satin finish.

Saturators can also be tinted. XyloGuard Hydro Saturator offers a matt-satin finish that enhances the wood's authentic appearance.

Choose our range of high-quality products to cover your woodwork. Xyloguard Hydro stain and saturator can be tinted. So you can embellish your woodwork. You'll find what you're looking for in our Xyloguard Hydro range of natural and trendy colours.

In short, woodstains and wood preservatives both offer effective protection for wood. The choice between a woodstain and a saturator will depend on your aesthetic preferences, the desired effect on the wood and the environmental conditions to which your wood is exposed.

Tips for successful application:

  • Avoid applying woodstain or saturator in very hot, cold or damp weather. This can affect adhesion and drying.
  • Apply the woodstain in thin coats to avoid drips and obtain an even finish.
  • Apply the saturator until the wood no longer absorbs it and wipe off the excess to achieve an even finish.
  • Monitor the wear and tear of the woodstain and saturator over time and touch up as necessary to maintain and protect the wood.

Maison de ontagne avec terrasse et façade en bois

Thanks to our know-how and mastery of Swiss wood, we offer professionals XyloGuard Hydro, a range of water-based woodstains and saturators for interiors and exteriors.

Properties of the XyloGuard Hydro range

Outside, wood is exposed to heat, cold and rain. Exposed to the sun's rays, the surface discolours and, over time, the wood can become brittle. Under the effect of rain, the wood rots and loses its stability.

Our XyloGuard Hydro range has the best UV and weather resistance on the market, thanks to our formula based on "Hybrid3 Technology". This revolutionary water-based emulsion combines three benchmark resins, acclaimed for their exceptional properties: alkyd resin, acrylic resin and polyurethane resin.

The microporosity of the woodstain and saturator ensures that the wood breathes. What's more, this range is ideal for preventing ageing and greying of wood surfaces.

Features of the XyloGuard Hydro range

Application d'une lasure sur une façade bois pour traitement

Our XyloGuard Hydro range will be your ally in protecting and decorating your wooden structures, whether they're new, need renovating or simply require maintenance. For both the stain and the saturator, the yield is 14 m2/L per coat (variable depending on the species and quality of the substrate).

XyloGuard Hydro stain can be diluted with water and has no solvent odour. It penetrates deep into the wood and has a very long open time. It is resistant to dimensional variations in the wood and is compatible with old adherent microporous woodstains

With XyloGuard Hydro woodstain, you benefit from a fast drying time (30 minutes to touch, 4 hours to recoat), so you can apply several coats on the same day. It's an easy-to-apply woodstain with a satin finish. It holds well with a brush and won't run.

XyloGuard Hydro saturator is ideal for horizontal surfaces (terraces, decks, etc.). It is water-based, so odourless and easy to clean. It gives your surfaces a matt-satin finish and enhances the grain of your woodwork. It's the ideal solution for effectively protecting your surfaces against greying. XyloGuard Hydro saturator impregnates the wood deeply, without any film-forming effect, but with a water-repellent effect on the surface. This regulates humidity and stabilises the dimensions of the wood.

As with woodstain, the saturator has a fast drying time (30min to touch, 30min to recoat), so you can apply different coats the same day.
